The UN system comprises the following groups – _Z7N6164.JPGthe Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Bank, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The FAO is classified as a “Programme”; the UNICEF is a “Fund”, while the rest are designated as “Agencies”. Together they comprise the United Nations Country Team (UNCT). The team is led by a Resident Coordinator who is also the Resident Representative of the UNDP.

    UN Resident Coordinator System

_Z7N6185.jpgThe UN Resident Coordinator System aligns UN assistance with the strategies, priorities, and needs of the host country's government. The Resident Coordinator System also fosters a culture of collaboration and cooperation amongst the UN bodies operating on the country-level, drawing on the resources and support of the entire UN family. In a coordinated manner they seek to advance the core missions of the UN system as well as promote the vision and principles of the UN Charter.

    UN Resident Coordinator (RC)

_Z7N1444-44.jpgThe UN Resident Coordinator (RC) is the UN Secretary-General's designated representative for development cooperation and operational activity at the country level. The UN Resident Coordinator leads the UNCT to act as one body with a division of labour but with an integrated work plan.

    Objectives

The main objectives of the UN Country Team are to work collectively and individually to support the Government’s efforts to build its national development capabilities. Within the UN system, the Thematic Groups are formed to encourage greater collaboration and synergy amongst the UNCT, functioning as avenues for information exchange and as a mechanism to review programmes and projects.  Thematic groups may include the participation of the Bretton Woods Institutions, bilateral partners, government representatives and non-state actors.
